Description
The United States Air Force 8th Fighter Wing (8 FW) is the host unit at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea and is assigned to Seventh Air Force. The 8th TFW was transferred without personnel or equipment to Kunsan Air Base, South Korea on 16 September 1974, where the wing absorbed resources of the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing which had been reassigned without personnel or equipment to Clark AB, Philippines. The 8th Fighter Wing entered a new era in November 2000. In September of 1981 the 80 FS became the first unit stationed overseas to convert to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. On Jan. 31, 1992, the 80 TFS was redesignated 80 FS and reassigned to the TFW. The 80 FS continues to support the United States Contingent in Korea with the same pride and excellence instilled in the squadron from the "Headhunters" of the past. The 80 FS (traditionally nicknamed the "Headhunters", and since 1971 also known as the "Juvats". The combination of LANTIRN and night-vision goggles has allowed the Wolf Pack to take the fight into the night. The General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. Designed as an air superiority day fighter, it evolved into a successful all-weather multirole aircraft. Over 4,500 aircraft have been built since production was approved in 1976.The F-16's official name is "Fighting Falcon", but "Viper" is commonly used by its pilots, due to a perceived resemblance to a viper snake as well as the Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper starfighter. In addition to active duty U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command, and Air National Guard units, the aircraft is also used by the USAF aerial demonstration team, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, and as an adversary/aggressor aircraft.
