Description
The 81st Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) received its first McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II's in November 1965 to replace the F-101,Voodoos. The Bentwaters-based 91st and 92nd Tactical Fighter Squadrons (TFS) flew the F-4C, and later the Woodbridge-based 78th TFS was upgraded to the more capable F-4D during late 1972 and 1973. The Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II replaced the F-4Ds in June 1979. With the A-10, the squadron's mission changed to close air support and battlefield air interdiction in support of NATO ground forces. The 91st TFS is an inactive USAF unit with its last assignment with the 81st TFW, at RAF Bentwaters. It was deactivated on 14 August 1992. With the end of the Cold War in 1991, the USAF presence at Bentwaters was gradually phased down. It was announced that the base would be closed.
