The Shooting Star was the first U.S. Air Force aircraft to exceed 500 mph in level flight, the first American jet airplane to be manufactured in large quantities, and the first USAF jet to be used in combat.A major variant of the F-80 was the T-33 Shooting Star, a two-seat trainer version. The T-33 was developed from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 by lengthening the fuselage by slightly over three feet and addinga second seat, instrumentation and flight controls. Originally designated the TF-80C, the T-33 made its first flight on 22 March 1948 with U.S. production taking place from 1948 to 1959.It remained inproduction until 1959, after a total of 6,557 were built.
