Description
The 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing (363TFW) was reactivated in 1985 at Shaw AFB as the wing's third F-16 Squadron. The 33rd Tactical Fighter Squadron (33TFS) started receiving the first F-16s in 1985. The 33TFS received brand-new block 25 airframes straight from the General Dynamics Fort Worth production line. Between two deployments the squadron started receiving some brand-new block 42 airframes. It was trained in tactical fighter missions designed to destroy enemy forces, 1985–1993. The 363TFW deployed aircrews and aircraft to Southwest Asia (SWA) during the 1991 Gulf War; later participated in Operation Southern Watch over southern Iraq in support of United Nations operations, 1992–1993. Lt Col Gary L. North, commander of 33rd Fighter Squadron, became the first American F-16 pilot to score an aerial victory in SWA, 27 December 1992. The 363FW was later inactivated in late 1993 when the 20th Fighter Wing assumed the mission and assets of the 363rd Fighter Wing as part of the Air Force downsizing after the end of the Cold War.
