Description
On 16 September 1974, the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing moved without personnel and equipment from Kunsan AB, South Korea to Clark Air Base, Philippines. It replaced the inactivated 405th Tactical Fighter Wing. The 3rd Tactical Fighter Squadron, equipped with the F-4E joined the wing in December 1975, replacing the 68th Tactical Fighter Squadron, which had been inactivated earlier. The wing switched to an air superiority mission in January 1978. The F-4Es were retrofitted with a Lear Siegler AN/ARN-101(V) to improve navigation and accuracy of weapons delivery. They were also retrofitted with AVQ-23A/B Pave Tack range finder, AN/AVQ-26 Pave Tack infrared/laser target designator and AN/ASX-1 target identification system. A modification of the F-4E, the Advanced Wild Weasel aircraft performed a ground radar suppression and destruction mission. With the addition of the F-4G, flown by the 90th TFS, the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing acquired the triple role capabilities of air sovereignty, air-to-ground and defense suppression/electronic countermeasures.
