Description
This is dedicated to my father, SSgt Gronkowski, nose gunner on the B-24-J, Roough Knight. B-24J, SN 42-100209 flew 45 combat missions, over 363 combat hours, from September 1943 through November 1944. It was completed on November 24, 1943 at Consolidated-San Diego. The 380th Bombardment Group (H) flew the B-24 in the Southwest and Western Pacific during WWII. Part of the 5th Air Force, they were known as The Flying Circus and King of the Heavies. It was credited with a Japanese twin engine fighter (nick) kill over Halmahera on May 8, 1944.The nose art, Rough Knight, was conceived by 1Lt Leonard Kreuser and his crew while based at Fenton Field, Australia. MSgt Gronkowski retired from the military with over 40 years of service. The stories of the crew and Rough Knight, told by him, reflected the pride and love he maintained until his passing on August 10, 2010. With 102 combat missions, Rough Knight was flown to by Colonel Forrest L. Brissy to Washingtom DC for a war Bond Tour that was cancelled before it ever started. The old war weary bird was flown to Kingman, AZ were it was retired and recycled in September 1945.
