Description
Training Squadron THIRTY-ONE began training Student Naval Aviators in February 1958 as Advanced Training Unit 601. VT-31's transition to the Beechcraft T-44A began in spring of 1977, and on 8 February 1979, the last TS-2A departed the squadron. The T-44A is the military version of the popular Beechcraft King Air 90 and is equipped with a full range of avionics equipment for instrument conditions including a weather radar and RNAV. VT-31 is one of four aviation training squadrons attached to Training Air Wing FOUR and is one of two advanced multi-engine training squadrons in the Navy. The T-44A Pegasus was a trainer version, designated the Model H90 by Beechcraft, powered by two model PT6A-34B turbo-prop engines manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada. The primary mission of the T-44A was to provide advanced maritime flight training to United States Navy pilots to fly multi-engine turboprop aircraft such as the P-3Orion and the C-130 Hercules. A total of 61 were delivered to the US Navy between 1977 and 1980. In August 2006, the Navy announced, after 29 years of operation, the T-44A fleet would be upgraded with modernized avionics systems, and redesignated T-44Cs. Today, the T-44C Pegasus is used to train United States Navy pilots to fly multi-engine aircraft such as the P-8 Poseidon, E-6 Mercury, as well as the P-3 Orion which has begun to become replaced by the P-8 Poseidon.
