Description
The F-4E Phantom II is a two-place, Mach 2 capable, long range, all weather fighter-bomber built by McDonnell Douglas. Mission capabilities include: long-range, high-altitude intercepts using both radar and heat seeking air-to-air missiles as primary armament; a 20mm rapid-fire Gatling gun as secondary armament; long-range attack missions using conventional or nuclear
weapons; and interdiction or close air support missions using a choice of bombs, rockets, and missiles as primary armament. Thrust is provided by two single-rotor, axial-flow, variable stator turbojet engines with afterburners. Primary mode of bomb delivery is Dive Toss. With the missile capability and internal cannon they were ready and waiting for MiGs whenever they wanted to play. On 2 May 1966, the 34th TFS was activated and assigned to Pacific Air Forces. The squadron was part of the 41st Air Division at Yokota Air Base, Japan. One month later, the 34th TFS deployed and was attached to the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing at Korat RTAFB, Thailand. The unit was equipped with the F-105 Thunderchief and conducted combat operations until May 1969. While assigned at Korat RTAFB, the squadron transitioned into the F-4E Phantom II and continued combat operations in Southeast Asia. The 34th TFS participated in Operation Prize Bull on September 21st 1971. This was the first time U.S. forces bombed North Vietnam using all-weather capability. The 34th TFS performed strike missions in support of a recovery operation for the SS Mayagez, a merchant freighter captured by Cambodian Khmer Rouge guerrillas in May 1975.
