Description
The 313th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) was an active United States Air Force unit last assigned to the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing and stationed at Hahn Air Base, Germany. The 313th TFS was reactivated on 15 November 1976 at Hahn AB, Germany. In 1981 the 313th became the first unit to operate the F-16 Fighting Falcon in USAFE. Inactivated at the end of the Cold War on 30 December 1991. The F-4E is a two-place, Mach 2 capable, long range, all weather fighter-bomber built by McDonnell Douglas. Mission capabilities include: long-range, high-altitude intercepts using both radar and heat seeking air-to-air missiles as primary armament; a 20mm rapid-fire Gatling gun as secondary armament; long-range attack missions using conventional or nuclear weapons; and interdiction or close air support missions using a choice of bombs, rockets, and missiles as primary armament. Thrust is provided by two single-rotor, axial-flow, variable stator turbojet engines with afterburners. As of the end of December 1968, although the majority of the aircrews did not possess extensive combat experience, the quality of their performance leaves no doubt as to their desire and abilities. The F-4Es were retrofitted with a Lear Siegler AN/ARN-101(V) to improve navigation and accuracy of weapons delivery. They were also retrofitted with AVQ-23A/B Pave Tack range finder, AN/AVQ-26 Pave Tack infrared/laser target designator and AN/ASX-1 target identification system.
