The CV-22 Osprey is one of the newest aircraft in the Air Force Special Operation Commands (AFSOC) inventory and represents a revolutionary method of employing airpower. The CV-22 is a heavily modified Bell-Boeing tiltrotor aircraft, designed to meet the demands of the AFSOC mission. It combines the Vertical TakeOff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities of a helicopter with the speed, range, and service ceiling of a turboprop airplane. The primary mission of the 8 SOS is to conduct clandestine infiltration, exfiltration, and resupply of special operations forces over a wide range of environmental conditions. The aircraft can perform a variety of other missions including shipboard operations, non-combatant evacuation operations, and personnel recovery, operating in the deep battle space in a medium to high threat environment.
