Description
Developed in the late 1970s and 1980s, the Advanced Technology Bomber (ATB) program called for a low-observable, medium to high altitude bomber capable of penetrating hostile airspace. The ATB relies on stealth design and composite structure to evade detection by enemy air defense systems until it closed to within miles of its target. The aircraft features simple flight control
surfaces, operated by a fly-by-wire flight control system to ensure optimum control response in the relaxed stability design. The aircraft relies on completely smooth surfaces, especially in the
area of blended flight deck, and engine nacelles. The structure is comprised largely of RADAR-absorbent materials. This ensures minimum radiation reflection back to hostile threat emitter/receiver systems. This allows the ATB to have a RADAR Cross Section (RCS) of about 10 ft2. The ATB is virtually undetectable by RADAR and Infrared sensors, except at short ranges at which the ATB can be seen with the naked eye. The ATB fleet will be capable of carrying 2000 of the 4845 strategic nuclear weapons in the U.S. Air Force inventory and will have provisions for carrying conventional weapons as well.
