The U.S. Navy Lockheed C-121J Constellation (BuNo 131623) became "Blue Angel Number 8" in 1968 and was assigned to the team to transport support personnel and equipment to air show locations around the United States. The overall blue paint scheme pictured was replaced in 1969 with one in which the upper half of the fusealge above the yellow line was painted white. The C-121J replaced the Douglas C-54 Skymaster as the Blue Angels support aircraft prior to the start of the 1968 show season. The aircraft served the team for over two years until replaced by the Lockheed KC-130F Hercules during the 1970 show season. The Blue Angels is the United States Navy's flight demonstration squadron, with aviators from the Navy and Marines. The Blue Angels team was formed in 1946, making it the second oldest formal flying aerobatic team (under the same name) in the world, after the French Patrouille de France formed in 1931.
