Description
The 16th Weapons Squadron is assigned to the United States Air Force Weapons School at Nellis AFB, Nevada. The 16th was activated as the 16th Pursuit Squadron on 20 November 1940 at Hamilton Field, CA. During World War II, the 16th Pursuit Squadron flew missions in New Guinea, India, and China in the P-40, P-47, and P-51. During the Korean War, the 16th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron flew missions from Korea and Japan in the F-80 and F-86. After the Korean War, the 16th was stationed in Korea, Japan and Florida, flying missions in the F-102 and F-4. In January 1979, the 16th Tactical Fighter Training Squadron became the USAF's first F-16A operational squadron at Hill AFB. The 16th operated as a division within the Fighter Weapons School and produced its first graduating class of Weapons Officers in 1982. In 2003 it was reactivated as the 16th Weapons Squadron at Nellis AFB where it continues to fly the F-16C Block 40 and has graduated almost 900 Weapons Officers since its inception.
