Artist's Description
The F-4E Phantom II is a two-place, Mach 2 capable, long range, all weather fighter-bomber built by McDonnell Douglas. Mission capabilities include: long-range, high-altitude intercepts using both radar and heat seeking air-to-air missiles as primary armament; a 20mm rapid-fire Gatling gun as secondary armament; long-range attack missions using conventional or nuclear
weapons; and interdiction or close air support missions using a choice of bombs, rockets, and missiles as primary armament. Thrust is provided by two single-rotor, axial-flow, variable stator turbojet engines with afterburners. Primary mode of bomb delivery is Dive Toss. With the missile capability and internal cannon they were ready and waiting for MiGs whenever they wanted to play. On 2 May 1966, the 34th TFS was activated and assigned to Pacific Air Forces. The squadron was part of the 41st Air Division at Yokota Air Base, Japan. One month later, the 34th TFS deployed and was attached to the 388th Tactical Fighter...
